Best places for expats: Why celebrities choose Nevis and why should you
Why visit the Caribbean? This region is one of the best places for expats for its wide range of opportunities, excellent surroundings, and citizenship programs. At Mundo, we love Nevis, in particular, and that's why we decided to pen a piece on what we consider to be one of the best places for business.
It's no coincidence that many celebrities and high-net-worth individuals choose the island of Nevis for residency or recreation. What is it about this place that attracts people who are used to luxury and premium living?
Best expat countries: Saint Kitts and Nevis
First of all, it's worth noting the difference between Nevis and Saint Kitts and Nevis. The former is a part of the latter as the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis is formed by the said islands. While Saint Kitts is bigger and more active, Nevis offers a calm haven to relax and enjoy. Many celebrities in the Caribbean have chosen Nevis as their favorite destination.
One of the island's charms is the fact that it's not easy to reach: visitors fly to Saint Kitts and then transfer via ferry.
Why visit the Caribbean? Celebrities in St Kitts
One way of assessing the best places for expats is to analyze who visits them. Nevis is happy to receive la crème de la crème as many celebrities in the Caribbean choose this island. In the 90s, Princess Diana visited Nevis together with her sons. In Nevis, she found solace away from her tense relationship with Prince Charles. The fact that Nevis presents a wide British expat community surely helped.
Also in the 90s, the famous Oprah was one of the celebrities in Saint Kitts and Nevis. On the island, she even imparted entrepreneurial advice and inspired a chef to open her own restaurant.
Singers, music stars, and actresses also prefer Nevis. Once the most famous couple in the pop music industry, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake gave Nevis a try. Being at the height of their relationship and the peak of their careers they chose the island to enjoy the sun, the beach, the calmness, and why not a little dancing at a local club. Other celebrities to like one of the best places for expats are Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who had a wonderful stay here in their early years as a couple. They've been seen having dinner on Pinney’s beach.
One of the greatest voices in the United States, Whitney Houston, stayed in a luxury resort with her family in the early 2000s. Finally, the movie star Angelina Jolie had an escapade and stayed in a private retreat.
Why visit the Caribbean and most importantly why stay?
Why visit the Caribbean is a question for tourists, couples, or families that are looking for a great trip. The second question “Why stay?”, is a totally different one.
Mundo recommends the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis because it allows a relatively easy path to citizenship. While in other countries applicants must undergo extensive procedures only to prove being descendants of original citizens, or some form of de jure right, in St Kitts things are easier.
Of course, everything comes with its conditions, and here it's necessary to make a monetary contribution, which can be in the form of a donation or investment. Thus, the person has the right to apply for citizenship which in no way can be mistaken with buying a passport.
After its recent amendment, the St Kitts citizenship by investment program’s lower threshold became 250,000 dollars. With this sum, an individual can apply for citizenship through a government donation, but this only includes the main applicant. For a $300,000 donation the person can apply with the spouse and with $350,000 they can apply with a family of four.
It's worth noting that the donation is similar to a gift that can’t be returned. One deposits the cash but there are no money-back possibilities. The investment, on the other hand, is more expensive but can bring returns, capital gains, or at least a whole refund. In Saint Kitts and Nevis, the minimum investment threshold for real estate is $400,000 and the minimum ownership period is 7 years. This means that in seven years you can sell the property and get the money back with the possibility of appreciation. Rental income is also a benefit if one is willing to pay more in the first stages. Nonetheless, the investment thresholds don't include legal fees, government fees, or expenses.
